February 2018 Meeting Minutes

February 22, 2018

President Karen Szoke presided.

President’s Report: Karen opened the meeting and introduced the guests to the meeting.

Programs Report: Linda Spellman reviewed the planned program including a presentation by Pat Naugle, President of the Adams County Watershed Alliance and a tour of the Mason Dixon Distillery. She reviewed the program for the March meeting – a make and take of Kokedama bonsai.

Membership: Cindy Wilcox reported that Jo Zeveney completed a book with pictures from the Christmas greens sale and tea and it would be on display at the meeting.

Ways and Means: Robin announced the availability of potted pussy willow cuttings to be sold for $5.00 each for fund raising purposes. Robin reminded club members that the Club gets a 25 percent donation from the purchase of bulbs from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs for orders made by March 1.

Robin reminded members to bring items for the upcoming members only yard sale to be held at the March 22, 2018 meeting. Robin talked about the preparations underway for the plant sale to be held on May 19. Donna and Betsy have agreed to be co-chairs.

Recording Secretary’s Report: Karen reported that the minutes from the January 25, 2018 meeting were approved and posted on the website.

Corresponding Secretary’s Report: Pat Richardson reported that she sent a thank you note to Chuck Moran, the Manager of the Gettysburg Hotel, for a $650 donation based on the selection of Lincoln Square as the hotel staff’s choice of the best community beautification project. Birthday cards were sent to sustaining members Dorothy Fidler and Jean Holder. She sent a card to Lori Fruhand, Office Manager of the fire station, expressing sympathy in the loss of her mother. A get-well card was sent to Betty Pue, who had a stay in the hospital and Betty Pue sent the Club a thank you card.

Treasurer’s Report: Connie Holland reviewed the Treasurer’s Report for January 2018. She highlighted $45.96 in income from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs for two years of purchases and receipts and disbursements related to the District IV meeting. The YTD balance is $26,276.59, including $$2,680 in the Blue Start Maintenance Fund, with additional funds in CDs of $5,919.94.

History: Jo Zeveney completed a book of pictures from the Christmas greens sale and tea.

Scholarships: Rita Bennett reported that they had received one good application so far.

Hospitality: Patty Hinkle thanked Rita Bennett, Connie Farabaugh, Sue Wilson, Janet McCoy, and Chris Stoken.

Old Business: Karen reported that Connie and Ken Farabaugh donated $250.00 to the Downtown Flower Project. She reported that the plans were falling into place for the watering this year.

2018 Fall Flower Show – Caryl O’Gara provided an update for the fall show including:

  • The fall flower show held will be held at the fire station in partnership with the Biglerville GC on Friday September 14, and Saturday September 15 with set up to take place on Thursday September 13.
  • The schedule is being developed and will be posted on the GGC website and the Pennsylvania Federation website.

Audio System – The plan to order a new cordless microphone has been delayed because the fire station has new equipment to consider.

Announcements and Event Reminders:

Eleanor Kuhn had knee replacement surgery. Please send cards wishing a speedy recovery.

Karen said that flowers and a card would be sent to Alex Hayes at the Gettysburg Times in sympathy for his mother’s passing.

National Garden Club Annual Convention – May 21-24 at the Lowes Hotel in Philadelphia.

Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania Convention – April 15-17 at The Double Tree by Hilton, Meadow Lands, Washington, PA.

The Garden Club Federation is asking for photographs that can be used in a Visions of Beauty calendar they are preparing.

Chambersburg Hosting the District IV Meeting – April 5, Orchard Restaurant, 1580 Orchard Drive, Chambersburg. Entries for Trash to Treasure are encouraged – Karen needs to know about any entries by March 22.

Pennsylvania Garden Club of York Flower Show – March 2-4 at the York Expo Center, Memorial Hall, 334 Carlisle Avenue in York.

Next Meeting: The next regular meeting is March 22, 2018.
